How to Make Homemade Mozzarella Sticks

Preheat & Prep

Preheat your oven to 425°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

Make Breading

Add the flour to a shallow bowl. Flour helps the eggs stick to the cheese.

In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until smooth. Eggs help the breadcrumbs stick to the cheese as well, and milk thins the eggs so they don’t form clumps around the mozzarella sticks.

In a third bowl, mix together the plain bread crumbs, panko bread crumbs, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and kosher salt. This sets up your breading station!

Dip Mozzarella Sticks

Dip each mozzarella stick into the flour, followed by the egg, and then the breadcrumbs. Then, dip it back into the egg and back into the breadcrumbs again.

Pro tip: Double breading helps prevent the mozzarella sticks from leaking in the oven– don’t skip it!

Bake to Perfection

Once all of the sticks have been breaded, spray them lightly with olive oil spray and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the sticks are light brown and crisp around the edge.

Serve & Enjoy!

Serve the mozzarella sticks warm with a side of marinara sauce. Enjoy!

What type of mozzarella should i use?

We love using mozzarella string cheese for mozzarella sticks because they’re low moisture and hold their shape when baked.

Breadcrumbs vs. panko?

We love the combination of plain and panko breadcrumbs — it adds just the right amount of crunch! If you don’t have both, feel free to use one or the other.

Best seasoning for mozzarella sticks

We use a combination of the following spices to season our mozzarella sticks, but choose your own adventure if you’d like to season differently. You can’t go wrong with any Italian blend!

  • Garlic powder
  • Italian seasoning
  • Salt

Reheating mozzarella sticks

These mozzarella sticks are best enjoyed immediately, but if you have leftovers and would like to reheat, bake at 350°F for 5-8 minutes or until warm.

Dipping Sauce for Mozzarella Sticks

Mozzarella sticks are traditionally served with marinara sauce, and our sister site Fit Foodie Finds has a delicious homemade marinara recipe. If you’re opting for store-bought marinara, we love:
