This cottage cheese pasta is my kind of weeknight comfort food: tender rigatoni and sweet peas are coated in a silky tomato sauce that gets its creamy texture from blended cottage cheese. Bursting cherry tomatoes, Parmesan, basil, and a full tablespoon of crushed red pepper flakes make every bowl bright, rich, and genuinely spicy.
It is a complete pasta dinner that feels special without relying on heavy cream. The cottage cheese contributes protein and blends into the tomato mixture so smoothly that the finished dish is creamy, savory, and completely cozy.

❤️ Why You’ll Love This Cottage Cheese Pasta
- It is truly creamy: Blended cottage cheese creates a velvety tomato sauce without heavy cream.
- The spice is real: A full tablespoon of crushed red pepper flakes gives this pasta a bold, warming kick.
- It is a complete dinner: Rigatoni, peas, tomatoes, cheese, and basil make this a satisfying bowl all on its own.
- Fresh ingredients shine: Cherry tomatoes become sweet and jammy, balancing the crushed red pepper beautifully.
- It is weeknight-friendly: The ingredient list is short and familiar, and the whole dish is ready in about 40 minutes.
Featured Ingredients
This cottage cheese tomato pasta starts with rigatoni, a sturdy tube-shaped pasta that catches plenty of creamy tomato sauce. I love its hearty bite here, though another chunky pasta shape works well, too. Frozen peas add sweet pops of color and make the dish feel even more like a full meal.
Cherry tomatoes are the heart of the sauce. Their natural sweetness offsets the heat from the crushed red pepper flakes, while yellow onion and garlic add a savory base. Cottage cheese gives the tomato mixture its signature creamy texture, and Parmesan adds salty, nutty depth. Fresh basil and more Parmesan are the perfect finish.
Ingredient Swaps
- Pasta: Rigatoni is my favorite, but penne, cavatappi, shells, or another tube-shaped pasta will hold the creamy sauce well.
- Peas: Frozen peas are easy and sweet. Baby spinach is a simple alternative if peas are not your favorite.
- Cottage cheese: Full-fat cottage cheese gives the richest texture, but low-fat cottage cheese also works. Ricotta can be substituted for a different creamy finish.
- Parmesan: Pecorino Romano brings a saltier, sharper flavor if that is what you have on hand.

Why Blended Cottage Cheese Makes This Pasta Creamy
Cottage cheese is the secret behind the luxurious texture of this pasta. On its own, it has soft curds, but once blended with the warm tomato mixture, it becomes smooth and creamy. The tomatoes bring acidity and sweetness, while cottage cheese softens those bright flavors into a sauce that clings to every piece of rigatoni.
I especially love cottage cheese here because it delivers a creamy result without masking the tomatoes, garlic, basil, or Parmesan. The finished pasta tastes like a rich, spicy tomato dinner—not like a bowl of cottage cheese. For another creamy, cheese-forward favorite, try my cottage cheese queso.
How Spicy Is This Cottage Cheese Pasta?
This is not a mildly spicy pasta. The full tablespoon of crushed red pepper flakes gives the dish noticeable, lingering heat that spicy-food lovers will appreciate. Creamy cottage cheese, sweet tomatoes, peas, and Parmesan round out the flavor, but they do not erase the spice.
If you are sensitive to heat, serve it with extra Parmesan and a cooling side such as my classic Caesar salad. Looking for the boozy tomato-and-cream pasta that inspired the original concept? My spicy vodka pasta bake is a true vodka-based alternative.
Cottage Cheese Pasta Tips
- For the smoothest sauce: Use a high-speed blender or food processor and keep blending until no cottage cheese curds are visible.
- If the sauce is too thick: Loosen it with a small splash of warm water while tossing it with the pasta.
- If the tomatoes are tart: Extra Parmesan and fresh basil help balance a particularly acidic batch of cherry tomatoes.
- To keep it creamy: Warm the finished sauce gently rather than bringing it to a hard boil.
Serving Ideas
This spicy cottage cheese pasta is substantial enough for dinner on its own, but I love pairing it with something crisp, fresh, or extra cheesy. A simple Caesar salad adds a cool, crunchy contrast, while my cheesy garlic bread is perfect for scooping up every last bit of creamy tomato sauce.
Storage and Reheating
Store leftover cottage cheese pasta in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The pasta absorbs sauce as it rests, so leftovers will be thicker than the freshly made dish.
Reheat individual portions gently until hot throughout, stirring in a small splash of water if needed to restore the creamy consistency. I do not recommend freezing this pasta because cottage cheese sauces can change texture after thawing.

Cottage Cheese Pasta

Equipment
- Large pot
- Large skillet
- Food processor or blender
Ingredients
- 8 oz. rigatoni pasta
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 yellow onion, minced
- 1 pint cherry tomatoes
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup cottage cheese
- 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, divided
- 1 tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 2 tablespoons torn basil leaves
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the rigatoni and cook according to the package directions until al dente. Add the frozen peas during the final minute of cooking, then drain the pasta and peas and return them to the pot.

- While the pasta cooks, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the minced onion and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and translucent.
- Add the cherry tomatoes and garlic to the skillet. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes soften and burst and the garlic is golden, about 8–10 minutes. Reduce the heat if the garlic begins to brown too quickly.

- Transfer the warm tomato mixture to a food processor or blender. Add the cottage cheese, crushed red pepper flakes, and 1/4 cup of Parmesan, then blend until completely smooth and creamy.

- Pour the blended sauce over the rigatoni and peas in the pot. Toss over low heat for 1–2 minutes, just until the pasta is evenly coated and warmed through; avoid boiling the sauce.

- Divide the pasta among 4 bowls and top with the remaining 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese and torn basil leaves. Serve immediately.

Tips & Notes
- Any tube-shaped or chunky pasta will work in this recipe.
- The peas can be cooked separately, but adding them during the final minute of the pasta cook time saves a dish.
- This recipe is intentionally spicy. Crushed red pepper brands vary, so adjust to your heat preference if needed.
- Blend the sauce until no cottage cheese curds remain for the smoothest texture.
