This tortellini caesar salad is what happens on the nights I have zero energy to cook but still want dinner to feel like I actually tried. A store-bought Caesar salad kit does almost all the work, and cheese tortellini turns it from a side dish into a real meal. I was skeptical a bagged salad kit could hold its own as dinner until I started dumping tortellini and extra parmesan into the mix — now this caesar tortellini salad is one of my most-made weeknight recipes.

A bowl of tortellini Caesar salad featuring pasta, grilled chicken, croutons, fresh greens, and Caesar dressing, with a small pitcher of dressing and grated cheese nearby.

This tortellini caesar salad turns a store-bought Caesar salad kit into a filling, cheesy main dish with almost zero effort. Cheese tortellini gets tossed with the kit’s romaine, dressing, and croutons, then loaded up with extra grated parmesan for good measure. It’s creamy, crunchy, and ready in under 20 minutes — the easiest “homemade” salad you’ll ever make.

Why You’ll Love This Tortellini Caesar Salad

  • It’s basically a shortcut recipe hack: The Caesar kit does the chopping, dressing, and croutons for you — I’m just adding the cheesy pasta upgrade.
  • It’s a full meal, not just a side: Cheese tortellini turns a side-salad-sized portion into something filling enough for dinner.
  • Ready in under 20 minutes: No oven, no homemade dressing, minimal dishes.
  • Endlessly customizable: Add grilled or rotisserie chicken, swap in a different salad kit flavor, or double the parmesan (no judgment here — I always do).

If you love a classic Caesar salad, you’re going to love this hack even more. I never skip the extra parmesan the recipe calls for beyond what the kit includes — cheese is never optional in my kitchen, and this salad is exactly why.

A bag of organic Caesar salad kit, a bowl of grated cheese, a bowl of tortellini pasta, and a small pitcher of creamy dressing on a white surface create the perfect setup for making a delicious tortellini Caesar salad.

What You’ll Need

This is intentionally a short ingredient list — no homemade dressing to whisk, no separate croutons to bake. That’s the whole point of a Caesar tortellini pasta salad this easy.

  • Cheese tortellini: Fresh or frozen both work here — just adjust the cook time per the package directions.
  • Caesar salad kit: Look for one that includes romaine, dressing, and croutons. I’ve tested a few brands for this recipe and always come back to Taylor Farms — the dressing-to-romaine ratio and crouton quality are just better than the others I’ve tried.
  • Grated parmesan: The kit usually includes a little, but I always add more.
  • Extra Caesar dressing: For tossing in extra at the end, to taste.
  • Salt and pepper: To finish.

Want to make your own dressing instead of using the kit’s? My Caesar salad dressing is an easy swap if you’d rather go homemade.

Key Tips for the Best Tortellini Caesar Salad

  • Rinse the tortellini in cold water after draining: The cold rinse stops the cooking instantly so the tortellini doesn’t turn mushy, and it cools the pasta down so it won’t wilt the romaine or turn the dressing greasy when you toss everything together.
  • Dry the tortellini before tossing: Excess water dilutes the Caesar dressing and makes the whole salad watery. Pat it dry or let it air-dry for a few minutes after rinsing.
  • Add the dressing gradually: Kit dressing portions vary, so add most of it, taste, then add the reserved extra dressing until it’s coated the way you like.
  • Assemble right before serving if possible: The kit’s croutons soften fast once they’re tossed with the dressing.

I learned the dry-off tip the hard way — the first time I made this caesar salad with tortellini, I skipped drying the pasta and ended up with a watery, bland salad. Patting it dry now is the fix that makes the difference between a good and a great version of this recipe.

Variations & Add-Ins

  • Add protein: Grilled chicken, rotisserie chicken, or shrimp turn this into an even heartier main.
  • Swap the tortellini: Spinach, chicken and herb, or three-cheese varieties all work.
  • Try a different kit flavor: Some Caesar kits include bacon bits or extra parmesan — any variety works here.
  • Bulk it up: Add halved cherry tomatoes or thinly sliced red onion for extra freshness and crunch.

My go-to at home is crispy bacon bits plus even more extra parmesan — that’s the combo I make on repeat. If you’re into simple pasta salads like this one, my bow tie pasta salad and caprese pasta salad are two more easy ones worth trying. And if you’d rather make your tortellini completely from scratch instead of using store-bought, my how to make cheese tortellini post walks through the whole process.

Storage

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
  • The croutons will soften over time — if make-ahead is a priority, store the dressing separately and toss just before serving.
  • I don’t recommend freezing this one — the romaine and dressing won’t hold up.

Tips & Notes

  • I used the Taylor Farms Caesar salad kit in this recipe. Any brand that includes romaine, dressing, and croutons will work.
  • The croutons soften quickly once dressed, so this salad is best served right away.
