This Monte Cristo Sandwich takes sandwich-making to a whole other level. This delicious sammie is dunked in a creamy egg mixture and grilled on a skillet until golden brown and crispy. It’s like a savory French toast but as a yummy sandwich!

I honestly don’t know if I can make sandwiches the same way again, thanks to this tasty Monte Cristo sandwich recipe!! The eggy-coated bread adds that irresistible texture and crunch that’ll have your eyes rolling in the back of your head. Guess I’ll have to try this method with my Buffalo Chicken Grilled Cheese and Pimento Cheese Sandwich!

Just make your sandwich as usual, dunk, grill, and go to town. We love adding a sweet element to savory dishes, so we highly recommend serving it sprinkled with powdered sugar, drizzled in syrup, or with a side of raspberry jam. You can thank me later 😉

What’s in a Monte Cristo Sandwich?

  • Brioche bread: The ultimate bread for dunking and grilling. Its fluffy texture and slightly sweet flavor make it the perfect vessel for this sammie.
  • Sliced ham: We used sliced deli ham in this sandwich, but leftover ham would also be a win!
  • Swiss cheese: The classic cheese choice for a Monte Cristo sandwich. Its nutty flavor pairs perfectly with the ham and brioche.
  • Dijon mustard: Adding a little tang and kick to the sandwich.
  • Eggs: Whisked with milk to create the dunking mixture for the sandwich.
  • Milk: Used to thin out the egg mixture and add some creaminess.
  • Butter: We used unsalted butter to grill the sandwich, and it adds rich, buttery goodness to each bite.

Optional Ingredients

  • Maple syrup
  • Jam 
  • Powdered sugar

What other cheese can be used for this sandwich?

We used Swiss cheese, but provolone or gruyere would also taste amazing in this sandwich. Any kind of melty cheese would be best. You could even mix and match different types of cheese for a unique flavor profile.

I LOVE sandwiches because you can experiment with them like a mad scientist. Here are a few other ideas to try out:

  • Swap out the ham for turkey or roast beef.
  • Add some thinly sliced apples to add a sweet and crunchy element.
  • Use different types of bread like sourdough, wheat, or even croissants!
  • Make it vegetarian by using grilled veggies as a filling instead of meat.
  • Turn it into a breakfast sandwich by adding scrambled eggs and bacon inside.

Here’s a tip!

While 2 tablespoons of butter are listed, you may or may not need to add more butter when flipping the sandwiches.

You can always add more as needed. Another option is to use mayonnaise on the outside of the bread instead of butter for a crispier texture!

Storing Your Monte Cristo Sandwich

If you have any leftover sandwiches, wrap them tightly in foil and store them in the fridge for up to two days. When ready to eat, reheat in a skillet over medium heat until warmed through.

Ingredients 

  • 4 slices brioche bread
  • 6 oz. sliced ham
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup any milk
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Optional

  • Maple syrup
  • Jam
  • Powdered sugar

Instructions 

  • To assemble the sandwich, put 3 oz. of sliced ham on 2 slices of bread. Place 2 slices of Swiss cheese on top of each sandwich. Spread 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard on each remaining slice of bread, then place it on top of the sandwiches. Set aside.
  • On a plate with high sides or a wide bowl, add the eggs, milk, and salt. Whisk together and set aside.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and allow to melt.
  • While the butter is melting, dip each sandwich into the egg mixture on both sides.
  • Place 1 or both sandwiches into the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown. Flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
  • Serve sprinkled with powdered sugar, drizzled in syrup, or a side of raspberry jam.
