Apple Pie with Cheese

This apple pie with cheese is the perfect combo of sweet and savory! We're using a pre-made crust, a traditional apple pie filling and an amazing cheesy crumbly topping.

Ingredients

Filling

  • 2.5 lbs. Granny smith apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • cup sugar
  • cup light brown sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 9-inch frozen pie crust

Crumble topping

  • ¼ cup all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons rolled oats
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • ½ cup sharp cheddar shredded
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted

Instructions

Filling

  • Preheat the oven to 350℉ and place your pie crust on a baking sheet.
  • Peel and core the granny smith apples. Slice the apples into ¼ inch pieces and transfer them into a large bowl.

  • Next add the sugars, cinnamon, flour, and lemon juice to the apple bowl. Toss until all of the slices are completely covered in the sugar mixture.
  • Transfer the apple mixture into the pie crust and set aside.

Crumble Topping

  • To make the topping, add the flour, oats, sugar, and cheddar into a bowl and stir with a fork.
  • Pour the melted butter into the crumble mixture and mix until the flour and sugar are a wet sand consistency.

  • Place the pie on a baking sheet and sprinkle the crumble all over the top. Bake at 350ºF for 55 minutes. When the pie is done, let rest for 30 minutes before serving so that the center can thicken.

Tips & Notes

  • It is important to bake the pie on a cookie sheet. In the beginning the apples will overflow in the crust, but they will settle and sink while baking.
  • You can certainly mix up the spices in this more traditional apple pie filling. Adding nutmeg and/or clove or vanilla can bring great warm flavor profiles. However, it is important not to adjust the crumble topping. Crumble toppings can be finicky. This one comes out perfectly crispy on top.
